Listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, Palmyra’s East Main Street Commercial Historic District was designated November 21, 1974. The district includes Palmyra’s downtown business area on both sides of East Main Street from Clinton Street on the east to William and Cuyler Streets on the west, and features two blocks of solid, brick 19th century commercial architecture. The commercial facades are two and three stories high with a variety of cornice detail – the decorated section that projects out from the top of a wall to decorate or finish the eaves of a roof. The first-floor treatments are ornate, as well, with many of the buildings hosting a cast iron storefront. In 2009, the East Main Street Commercial Historic District and the Market Street Historic District were included with the Palmyra Village Historic District. |
