Historic narrative:
Ezra T. Phelps Farm Complex, Marion, NY, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on August 13, 1997. The complex is located at 4365 East Williamson Road, Marion, NY.
At the time of listing, the property included the farmhouse, a timber framed barn, silo, and a brick smokehouse. The farmhouse was built prior to 1843 and is a front gabled Greek Revival structure with side and back wings. The barn has since been demolished.
Ezra Tuttle Phelps was born March 6, 1809, to Ezra (1758-1844) and Phebe Bishop Phelps in Marion. Ezra and Phebe were early settlers of Marion, coming here from Westfield, Massachusetts, around 1796 with Ezra’s parents, Luke and Prudence (stepmother) Phelps. Grandfather Luke, one of Marion’s prominent early settlers, was a Corporal in the Revolutionary War, first supervisor for the Town of Williamson, and one of the founding members of the Marion Presbyterian Church.
Ezra Jr. was the youngest of ten children. He married Minerva Boyce September 28, 1834, in Marion. Like his father and grandfather, Ezra Jr. farmed the Phelps farm. And like his grandfather, he served as deacon of his church for many years - the Baptist church, which his parents were founding members. Minerva came to Marion in 1834. Like her husband, Minerva came from a large family of eleven children. By all accounts, obituaries, and other information, they couple appear to have had no children, though it does appear they may have had an adopted daughter. Minerva was active in the Marion Baptist Church, teaching Sunday School for 64 years.
Ezra died in Marion April 7, 1893, at the age of 84. Minerva died in 1898, at the age of 84. They are buried in the Marion Cemetery.
