Dipper Dredge No. 3 is a historic dredge located at Lyons in Wayne County, New York. It is a steam-powered floating dredge located at the dry dock of the New York State Barge Canal at Lyons. The dredge consists of a rectangular riveted steel hull built in 1929 and measuring 110 feet in length, 34 feet in beam, and 7 feet in draft. The bow of the hull is squared and vertical. The stern is squared but inclined in the manner of a scow. In 1946, fuel bunkers were added to the sides of the hull. Much of the machinery, including the steam engines, was built in 1909. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 11, 2007, the Erie Canal Dipper Dredge No. 3 located in Lyons, NY. In order to keep the canal navigable, a dipper dredge, with its massive shovel, was used to remove the silt and muck from the bottom of the canal and deposit the shovelfuls beyond the canal's banks. Reported to be one of only two remaining steam powered vessels, Dipper Dredge No. 3 is located at the Lyons Dry Dock. Built in 1929 the dredge is a rectangular steel hull, measuring 110 ft in length, with a 34 ft beam, and 7 ft draft. Much of the machinery aboard was from 1909 recycled parts, including the steam engines. Dipper Dredge No. 3 was retired in 1985, after 56 years of service (76 years if you count the recycled mechanics). Dipper Dredge No. 3’s giant steam shovel removed tons of sediment from the canal, keeping the canal way clear for the passage of many vessels over the years. The historic dredge remains a reminder of the historic past of the Erie and Barge Canal systems.
