Historic narrative:

The Newark and Marion Railroad

From an article dated Oct. 1, 1926 in the Marion Enterprise Newspaper

“Marion is the only township in the state, and perhaps in the United States, to own and operate a railroad for the transportation of its products.  The road was purchased by public spirited citizens in May, 1917 and is known as the Marion Corporation Railroad.  It is a ten mile road and has direct connection with the Pennsylvania system at Newark giving low combined rates to distant points west and south. The railway has proved a valuable asset to the business activities and has brought to life two canning factories, two cold storage plants, two gristmills, two coal elevators and several produce dealers, making Marion the best market in Wayne County. The Wayne Produce Co. is located here, with a sales office in New York.  More than a million gallons of vinegar are manufactured in a year and distributed to more than 13,000 customers all over the country.  The capacity of this plant is 5,000 bushels of apples daily.  A quarter of a million bushels are ground here during the season. In 1924-25 there was shipped from this place over the Marion Corporation Railroad; 117 cars of apples, 73 cars of beans, 262 cars of canned goods, 334 cars of carrots, 870 cars of celery, 165 cars of lettuce, 165 cars of vinegar, and 150 cars of onions.”
