Description:

Miss Eleanor M. Dowd, former Huron resident and retired schoolteacher, 

donated the chapel to the community in 1949.  

Eleanor was the great granddaughter of Asahel Dowd - an early settler in Huron.  

Asahel was born in Tyringham, Berkshire County, Massachusetts.  

               Married Tabitha 1799 in Mass.

Asahel served in the Civil War.

The chapel was built at a cost of $4800. 

Windows were donated by M.C. Roberts of Fair Haven. 

Dedicatory prayer given by Reverend Leland Henry.

Historic narrative:

WOLCOTT - Miss Eleanor M. Dowd, 88, former Huron resident and retired school teacher, died Friday in Coral Gables, Fla., where she had made her home many years. She had been in failing health two years.

The Dowd memorial chapel and vault, in Huron Evergreen Cemetery, was given to the community by Miss Dowd five years ago. The red brick structure has high Gothic stained windows. A throng of three hundred attended the chapel dedication service held Sept. 11, 1949.

Miss Dowd was born Sept. 28, 1865 in the Town of Huron the only daughter of the late Alfred and Kate Eckerson Dowd who are buried in the Huron Cemetery. Her father was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Dowd, pioneer settlers of Huron. She is survived by several cousins.

Services were held at 2:30 p. m. Saturday Sept. 11 in the chapel in Huron Cemetery with burial in the family plot. The Rev. Russell Henry officiated.
