Description:

Emma Biddlecom was born in Macedon (Wayne
County), New York on August 13, 1862. She was a cousin of Susan B. Anthony, and
is best known as Anthony’s secretary during the last years of the famous
suffragist’s life.



She married Fred G. Sweet and lived in Rochester, New York.
Emma Sweet was an active member of the Unitarian Church. In the early 1890s,
she served as secretary of its “Social Topics Class,” a division of the Unity
Club. The Class, a discussion group, studied topics such as city government,
public education reform, tax reform, labor unrest, race relations, divorce,
co-education, and Populism. (Populism is the political doctrine that supports
the rights and powers of common people in their struggle with the privileged
elite.)

Historic narrative:

This text reads: “LINES FORM ON BOTH SIDES
– Young mothers and older mothers, busy shoppers and wives turn up at the
entrance to the Monroe County League of Women Voters, where information is
available on all facets of the current election.  Laden with bundles, herding a child, the
ladies with the vote intend to make intelligent use of their franchise.  Left to right are Mrs. Warren Hamilton, Mrs.
Ezra A. Hale, Mrs. Paul E. Smith, Mrs James Sebaste and Mrs. Henry A. Reich. To
the right of the door (left to right) are Mrs. Milton Karz, Mrs. Fred G.
Sweet
, Mrs. Raymond Lander Jr. with her son, Tommy, age 17 months; Mrs.
Robert M. Goodrich with Mrs. E. Mount Norris, end of line. They are
representative of Rochester Women Voters.
