Cobblestone service station, Williamson

On the north side of Main Street in Williamson is a converted doctor’s home, now a service station. The center-blocked lintels of its four front windows have been paired to permit the installation of plate show windows, and a side window has been cut down to provide a door.  A double entrance with paneled reveals and Doric trim replaces the original doorway, and is topped by a small transverse cobbled gable whose circular opening is a setting for a trademark.  The stone-trimmed oval gable window still has its fan shutter, but the other blinds are slightly undersized.  Modern standpipes painted white, and a two-bay garage on the east end of the building, make no attempt to appear old fashioned.  Otherwise, this broad one-and-a-half story cobblestone building retains its original character, and is well maintained.  It is a solid structure of selected reddish cobbles and heavy limestone quoins.  The elaborate cast iron window guards in the entablature employ the most popular of all Greek revival grille designs, a symmetrical scrolling interlace.

This building was constructed in 1838 as a home for Dr. Josiah Bennett, who died in 1850.  He was succeeded by Dr. W.W. Ward, who had a separate wood office building to the east of the house. About 1931, the cobblestone structure was altered to adapt it for its present use.
