In 1920, the three schools in the village of Newark changed their names to honor important US Presidents - Washington, Lincoln & Roosevelt. Newark Union School became Washington High School from 1920 to 1940.

A new high school was built in 1940.
During WWII, the Washington HS building was used as a POW Camp (1944-46).

Washington HS was torn down in 1948 except for the gymnasium. The current Community Center in use today was the former school's gymnasium.
