Historic narrative:
Nelson F. Strickland was a Captain in Company B, 9th NY Heavy Artillery. He was wounded during the war and discharged. His wife was Lodema.  Their son, D. Sherman Strickland, was a Private in Company A, 111th NY Infantry. He was killed July 2, 1863 at Gettysburg. Lodema performed a great deal of patriotic work in her lifetime, and is buried at the Freewill Cemetery along with her husband and son.

According to Walworth Historical Society records, there are 16 members of the Strickland family buried in Freewill.
