Description:
The PreEmption one-room schoolhouse no longer exists. According to NYGEN, this one-room schoolhouse was  built in 1840 and closed in 1944. The first year it opened in 1840, Gordon Granger taught at this school. He would go on to become a famous Civil War General and hero (Savior of Chickamauga) as well as the founder of the Juneteenth celebration which is the oldest known celebration of slavery's demise in the country.

Historic narrative:

The PreEmption one-room schoolhouse no longer exists. This schoolhouse served the PreEmption area for several generations until its closing in 1944. The first year it opened in 1840, Gordon Granger taught at this school. He would go on to become a famous Civil War General and hero (the Savior of Chickamauga) as well as the founder of the Juneteenth celebration which is the oldest known celebration of slavery's demise in the country.

After 1944, the building was moved and the school left the Town of Sodus School District and became part of the Rose School system.
