| The Baptist Church organized in 1804 and the Presbyterian Church in 1808, building churches across the street from each other. The first Baptist Church was a frame building with galleries on two sides and a center entrance erected in 1829. It was replaced in 1850 with another frame building, 40' x 70' with galleries on three sides. the plan was taken from a church in Manchester and cost $4000. The builder was Israel Mc Comber. The building was torn down in June 1903. The brick building was built in 1904 for $12,000. A pope organ was installed, a gift of Alonzo C. Potter. The Presbyterians built their first church, a frame building in 1830 on North Main Street. The seats ran along the long walls with the men sitting on the south side, the women on the north side and a stove in the center. Edmund Hosmer was in charge of the constructing the 50' x 36' church and an "out-of-town" man built the tower. It was torn down in 1910 and replaced with a brick building in 1911 at a cost of $20,000. The bell and windows from the old building were used in the new church. Using the Carnegie plan, the Morey Organ & Builders of Utica, NY installed a new pipe organ. In 1968 the congregations merged, forming the United Church of Marion. They held services at the East Campus (former Baptist Church) and meetings at the West Campus (Presbyterian Church). The Presbyterian building was razed in 1977. One of the stained glass windows was installed in the Fellowship Hall of the Baptist Church. | |||||
