This marker was erected by Marion members of the Colonel William Prescott chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution on July 4, 1934. Local lore has it that the Widow Styles kept this tavern and was a
"doctor" woman which generally meant that she was an herbalist who knew
what herbs to use to help people heal. The tavern would have been an
important building in an early settlement, allowing a place for
travelers to obtain food and lodging and a place to get local news.

Tavern Historic Marker

Historic narrative:
SITE OF THE FIRST TAVERN from the DAR dedication pamphlet on July 4, 1934 by Catherine Westfall

"Practically nothing is known about the owner of the tavern, which was located on the Pulver lot at the intersection of Mill and Main Sts. It is said to have been managed by a widow named Styles, who was also versed in the use of herbs, and was in demand as a doctor.  The tavern was an important institution in those days for wayfarers or travelers, and as such was considered worthy of a marker by the residents of the vicinity."
