Historic Site #:03-037   (Exists)   Type: B1 Town:Galen
Site Name:White Schoolhouse CemeteryGPS Coordinates:43.11292, -76.86876
Address:10857 Kelsey Rd. Clyde New York on the corner of Rte. 414 and Kelsey Rd.
Description:
This is a cemetery of early pioneers located next to what was once the White Schoolhouse.

From the 1895 diary of Galen resident, Carlos Brown, a Civil War veteran and honored member of the Snedaker Post No. 173, G.A.R., it can be noted that he took six flags over to the White Schoolhouse Cemetery on the morning of May 30th. Apparently, this was to recognize veterans on Decoration Day, which he notes the family all went to Clyde that afternoon to celebrate.  Then on June 6th, he states that he went over to the cemetery to get the flags.

This above information came from Carlos Brown’s g-g-granddaughter, Edith Farrington. Decoration Day later became known as Memorial Day.

Historic narrative:

Two listings of White Schoolhouse Cemetery were donated by the Office of the County Historian. A consolidated listing was prepared in honor of her ancestors by Marcia Benton, a descendant of the Harpers, one of the earliest pioneer families of Galen. " List #2 showed different dates than list #1 for the same people. I put the 2nd listed dates in parentheses after the 1st listed dates (i.e. Becker, Elizabeth)." Because of discrepancies in dates, the site coordinators would greatly appreciate receiving information as to correct dates from other types of family resources.

Located in the town of Galen, about two miles north of Clyde Village, at the intersection of Route 414 and Kelsey Road. This list was typed from 2 separate lists, one dated May 1956 (List #1), and one received from the Seneca County Historian, dated Dec. 1979 (List #2, data in parentheses).

2005 Driving Directions - Rte. 414 North out of Galen. Second road on right is Kelsey Rd. Cemetery is on corner of Rte. 414 and Kelsey Rd.
