Historic narrative:

North Huron Methodist Episcopal Church – “Church on the Hill”

Organized in 1817, the North Huron Methodist Episcopal congregation began meeting at homes and at the Dutch Street Schoolhouse.  Services as well as Sunday School were offered to the local community.  The church incorporated in 1844 and that same year constructed a 36-feet x 46-feet frame building on Slaght Road, not far from the Dutch Street Schoolhouse, for the cost of $1200. The church was dedicated in 1846 by Reverend Hiram Matison. In 1894, a janitor was hired, to be paid 50˘ a week to build fires, clean and light lamps.

Hardy rural folk with little cash, the congregation valued their church and what it could do for their children’s lives. They kept up on various repairs over the years. The “Church on the Hill” continued until the late 1920s. An October 20, 1932 Lake Shore News clip reported that the “Church on the Hill,” east of North Huron was being torn down, and the lumber was in good condition.

The church appears on maps as far back as the 1853 Walling Map of Wayne County, the 1874 Beers Map of Huron (shown), and the map of Huron in the 1904 New Century Atlas of Wayne County.
