Description:
In 1880 Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Hurd Allerton built their palatial Victorian mansion on South Main St. on the site of the present modern Elks Club. Mr. Allerton had made his fortune in Pittsburgh and returned home to Newark a wealthy man.

In 1931 it was purchased by the Newark Elks Club. The lovely old mansion was demolished in 1957, replaced by the present modern building.
