Historic narrative:
The marker states: 

Malt Ruins

Site of the malt house of T.P. Thorn, where cereal grain was soaked in
water, allowed to sprout, then dried. The product, called malt, was 
used in making beer, whiskey, and certain foods. On August 19, 1877
the west wing of the building was heavily damaged by fire. Fire Chief
John Thomas, Jr. was severely injured when he fell through an open
trap door to the floor below.
