Historic narrative:
In the 1830's, with the Erie Canal almost paying for itself, entrepreneurs tried to link the Canal with Lake Ontario. One of the plans was to dig from the bottom of Sodus Bay down to the Erie Canal on the west side of Clyde. Although some money was obtained and some digging was done, the Sodus Bay Canal was never completed. Instead the canal was connected through Oswego to Lake Ontario.
